  • A New Chapter in the Story of the ILLINOIS and Deloitte Relationship

    By Melissa Silverberg

College of Business students and administrators interacted with Deloitte partners and professionals at the dedication of the new Deloitte Auditorium in the Business Instructional Facility on February 13, 2009. Everyone gathered in formal recognition of the unparalleled relationship between the College and Deloitte.

“Deloitte is the largest employer of Illinois graduates and the dedication is a way to celebrate our special relationship, our new instructional facility, and the promise of the future here for our students as they prepare to join top firms like Deloitte,” said  Larry DeBrock, interim dean for the College of Business.

CEO of Deloitte, Barry Salzberg said his firm has more than 600 ILLINOIS alumni working at 50 different Deloitte offices worldwide.

"Our relationship with the University of Illinois is very important. This program is among the top in the nation," Salzberg said. "And to be associated with such a prestigious program is an honor and a privilege."

Salzberg beamed with pride as he referred to the new auditorium as an "environment for students to feel inspired to learn and to become leaders of the future."

Many features of the newly opened Business Instructional Facility were noted by the speakers including its world class design and the eco-friendly qualities of the building.

Being the first green business instructional facility in the nation is what Salzberg called "icing on the cake."

Howard Engle, partner at Deloitte and active ILLINOIS alum, also spoke at the dedication.

"This is pretty cool for me," Engle began. "ILLINOIS defines who I am and seeing this project become a reality is a dream come true."

Engle added that the dedication was the beginning of a new chapter in the story of the ILLINOIS and Deloitte relationship.

Salzberg, Engle and other partners and professionals from Deloitte were joined by Ira Solomon, head of the accountancy department, and others from the College of Business to cut blue and orange ribbons, officially dedicating the new auditorium.

"It was really very touching," said Brett Purintun, senior in accountancy and a future Deloitte employee. "I didn't really how much effort went into this building and this auditorium."

Purintun said the relationship between the college and Deloitte was instrumental in his college career and that he feels the regular contact with the company has prepared him well for his future.

"Deloitte has so many opportunities in so many different areas, and we continuously hire the best," said Kelly Sunderbruch, University of Illinois recruiter for Deloitte. "So it only makes sense that the best students want to start their career at the best firm. This is such a top notch, world-class institution," she said.  "We are lucky to have so many wonderful alumni working for us."

Although it may be difficult for some students to leave ILLINOIS and all of the opportunities the College of Business has offered them, new Deloitte employees are ready for their future with the company.

"I'm pumped," said Nick Murphy, senior in Finance and future consultant at Deloitte. "It will be tough to leave, especially now with this beautiful new building. But with such a strong ILLINOIS base, I really feel ready."
