  • Solomon Awarded 2009 AICPA "Distinguished Achievement in Accounting Education"


    WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 26, 2009) – Ira Solomon, CPA, Ph.D., who heads the Department of Accountancy and holds the R.C. Evans Endowed Chair in Business at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, is the 2009 recipient of the Distinguished Achievement in Accounting Education award from the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

    Ernie Almonte, chair of AICPA, presented the award at the spring meeting of the Institute’s governing Council, which began today in Washington, D.C.

    This award is given each year to a full-time college accounting educator for distinguished excellence in teaching and national prominence in the accounting profession. The award has the dual function of extending profession-wide recognition to the recipient and promoting role models in academia.

    Solomon has made significant contributions to the development of the accountancy program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and elsewhere via his leadership with respect to innovative accounting curricula, especially Project Discovery. Project Discovery requires students to apply accounting principles to real-world problems through discovery learning, role-playing, case studies and other activities. The 16 cases Solomon developed with KPMG and other colleagues through this program have been downloaded more than 300,000 times and have been widely used by professors of accountancy nationwide.     Solomon is a prolific author with more than 75 published articles in academic and professional journals and nearly 100 papers presented at seminars and conferences around the world. He has authored or co-authored 25 books, monographs, reports and pamphlets. He has been a visiting distinguished scholar at the University of New South Wales in Australia, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

    Solomon currently is a member of the AICPA’s governing Council and is a past member of the Illinois CPA Society’s Board of Directors. He is a past recipient of the American Accounting Association’s Innovations in Auditing and Assurance Education and Outstanding Auditing Educator awards, as well as the St. Louis Accountancy Committee of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign Excellence in Teaching Award. Additionally, Solomon has worked with numerous doctoral students specializing in auditing and several of these students have received awards for their dissertations.

    Solomon started his teaching career as an assistant professor at the University of Arizona. He holds a doctorate in accounting, an M.P.A. in Accounting and a B.B.A. in Accounting from the University of Texas at Austin.
