Illinois CPA Society Bestows Special Award of Merit on University of Illinois Professor Ira Solomon
CHICAGO – The Illinois CPA Society has presented a Special Award of Merit to Ira Solomon, CPA, Ph.D, head of the Department of Accountancy and R.C.Evans Endowed Chair in Business at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Solomon officially received the award last month at the Society’s Annual Banquet honoring new CPAs and outstanding educators.
The Special Award of Merit recognizes outstanding and unique contributions to the profession. It is not an annual award and there has not been a Special Award of Merit recipient since 2004. The Society’s Outstanding Educator Task Force determines when this type of recognition is warranted to honor extraordinary efforts that go beyond traditional perceptions of the profession and its educators.
Solomon was cited for his work with the Society, the impact his research and ideas have made on the profession and for the international recognition that has been given to his development of innovative curricula and educational materials.
A long-time member of the Illinois CPA Society, Solomon has served as a director and a vice chair of the Society’s Board of Directors, chair of the Education Summit Task Force, and a member of numerous committees. He is also an Illinois member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants’ (AICPA) Council.
Elaine Weiss, President and CEO of the Society spoke of him saying, “Ira is most worthy of this honor. He has an illustrious career, is respected by both students and peers, and yet as those of us who have been fortunate to work with him know, he’s has always remained an approachable, down-to-earth individual.”
Before joining the University of Illinois faculty in the early 1980s, Solomon started his teaching career as an assistant professor at the University of Arizona. He holds a doctorate in Accounting, an M.P.A in Accounting and a B.B.A., all from the University of Texas at Austin. His research and teaching focus is external auditing. He has done an extensive amount of writing and received many academic honors and awards.
