Thomas Finnegan

Lecturer of Accountancy and Associate Director BSA/MAS Program

Biographical Sketch

Thomas R. Finnegan, J.D., Ph.D., C.P.A., is the Director of the Undergraduate Accountancy Program at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He has also served as Director of Academics for the Master of Business Administration (MBA) program at University of IllinoisCollege of Business.

Professor Finnegan received the College of Business Alumni Association Excellence-in-Teaching Award for Undergraduate Teaching in 2004, and was voted the “Top Professor” in the College of Business by Illinois’ business students in 2003 and the College’s “Professor of the Semester” by the Alpha Kappa Psi business fraternity in 2002. He has also received numerous other teaching awards including Illinois’ Executive MBA Outstanding Teaching Award and the Harriet and Charles Luckman Campus-Wide Undergraduate Distinguished Teaching Award.

Professor Finnegan was the faculty advisor to the University of Illinois College of Business student teams that won the 2006, 2010 and 2011 Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) National Business Case Competitions held in New Brunswick, New Jersey, at JNJ’s world headquarters. He is faculty advisor to Beta Alpha Psi and former advisor to the Latino Association for Business Students.

He holds a Ph.D. in Accountancy from the University of Illinois, a Juris Doctor (law) degree from the University of Illinois, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University.  He is a licensed CPA in Illinois and Indiana and a licensed attorney in Illinois. He is an author of accounting texts published by McGraw-Hill and South-Western College Publishing, and a member of Tau Beta Pi and Pi Tau Sigma engineering honoraries. 

As a member of the Department of Accountancy at Illinois, he has taught graduate and undergraduate financial, managerial, and tax accounting courses. He has worked for the public accounting firm, Arthur Andersen; the law firm, Winston & Strawn (Chicago); and the former Fortune 500 company, CBI Industries.
