Application Procedure

The application procedure requires that you [1] submit an application to the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; and [2] submit certain materials directly to the Graduate Studies Office of the Department of Finance.

  1. Submit an application for admission to the Graduate College and the appropriate application fee ($40.00 domestic; $50.00 international). You may apply online, or download and print the application, complete it, and mail it.

    1. Apply online. Your application will be transmitted via the internet and the fee can be paid by credit card. The web address is: http://www.oar.uiuc.edu/prospective/grad/applygr.html .
    2. Download the PDF version of the application, print it, complete it, and mail it. The web address to download the application is: http://www.grad.uiuc.edu/general/application.html . If you are unable to download the application please request a paper copy from the Finance Graduate Studies Office. Both application and fee should be sent directly to:

  2. Submit various supporting materials directly to the Finance Graduate Studies Office

    1. Personal statement. Your personal statement should explain your reasons for pursuing the Ph.D. degree.
    2. Transcripts. Original transcripts for all undergraduate and graduate schools you have attended. Transcripts should be sent by your university directly to the Finance Graduate Studies Office
    3. GMAT Official copy of Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) results sent by Educational Testing Service in Princeton, New Jersey. Scores on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) may be submitted in place of GMAT scores. Use institution code 1836 and department code 02. To request a copy of the bulletin contact:

    4. TOEFL (international students only).
      International applicants are required to submit results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), unless they satisfy one of the conditions for exemption listed below. Applicants must have a minimum score of 610 on the paper-based test or 257 on the computer-based test. Applicants are exempt from the TOEFL requirement if one or both of the following conditions are met:

      • The applicant has completed at least two academic years of full-time study (as defined by the home institution) within five years of the beginning of the proposed term of enrollment, or the applicant has completed a graduate degree, in a country where English is the primary language and at a school where English is the primary language of instruction. That is, English must be both the language of the country and the language of instruction at the school.
      • The applicant is from a country in which English is both the primary language and the official language.

    5. Three letters of recommendation. Letters from academic sources are preferred.

Effective for 2003-2004, tuition and fees for the academic year (Fall and Spring Semesters) for graduate students enrolled full-time total $8,800 for Illinois residents and $19,910 for non-residents. All admitted students receive financial support, either in the form of a fellowship or through employment as a research or teaching assistant, in combination with tuition and service fee waivers. Students making satisfactory progress can expect to receive support for up to five years.
