Over-The-Counter
In a burst of excitement we rush out to buy twelve copies of the Wall Street Journal and frantically go through section C looking for Discovery Café in the stock lists. It’s not there.
When it begins trading, the Discovery Café is so small and traded so infrequently, that it’s traded Over-The-Counter or OTC. The Over-The-Counter market gets its name from when smaller stocks could be bought and sold at the counter in the broker's office.
