BATS is an ECN out of Kansas City. It is arguably the largest independent ECN in the US and competes aggressively on trade order pricing.

Go to BATS and explore. Enter your own ticker symbols into the BATS viewer and watch; you'll see the prices change as the system matches bids and asks.

Be aware of the time, however. If you are a late night researcher the bids and ask board will be empty; the market is closed.
