Indices and Indicators
When someone asks "How’s the market today?" it’s generally not a good idea to give a complete answer. There are over 10,000 issues listed on the NYSE and NASDAQ, and even more trading Over the Counter. A complete answer would involve considerable time and confusion. What we need is a simple statistic that captures an overall picture of the market. For this we use an index or indicator.
