CBA TIMELINE **** 1868 - *Courses offered in the Commercial Department. **** 1880 - *School of Commerce discontinued. **** 1893 - *David Kinley hired in economics. **** 1895 - *Department of Economics established. **** 1902 - *Courses of Training for Business started. **** 1903 - *Master of Science in Economics introduced. **** 1904 - *PhD in economics introduced. **** 1913 - *First Commerce building dedicated. *Illinois one of three Charter Members of Beta Gamma Sigma, business honorary. **** 1914 - *First marketing courses taught at Illinois. **** 1915 - *College of Commerce and Business Administration established after "The Courses" break from Liberal Arts & Sciences. The three departments in the college are Economics, Business Organization and Operation (includes accounting), and Transportation. **** 1920 - *David Kinley appointed president of the U of I (1920-30). **** 1921 - *Bureau of Business Research founded. *MS in BB&O established. **** 1923 - *First endowed chair established in the college--the William B. Fore-runner of today's BAC. **** 1938 - *Master in Business Administration established (degree granted through the Graduate College). *BS in Marketing established. **** 1942 - *Commerce Placement Bureau established. **** 1943 - *Bureau of Business Research renamed Bureau of Economic and Business Research. **** 1946 - *New Commerce building renamed David Kinley Hall to honor the founder of the college and president of the university. **** 1948 - *MS in Marketing and Management, respectively substituted for MS in BB&O. **** 1949 - *Illinois Marketing Symposium established (the Paul D. Converse Award). **** 1950 - *PhD. in Business established. **** 1952 - *Graduate School of Business formed but disbanded two years later. **** 1953 - *Concentrations in BO&O given department status: accountancy, business education, business law, marketing, and management. **** 1957 - *The Hollander Collection purchased. This became the core of the outstanding economics collection in the Rare Books Library. * Some economics faculty split from the department to form a Department of Finance.
