Charles Finn Presented with 2002 William E. Winter Award
Charles E. Finn was one of two recipients presented with the 2002 William E. Winter Award for Outstanding Advocate Leadership during the University of Illinois Foundation's Annual Meeting Luncheon Program held at the Illini Union on Friday, September 27.Finn was cited as "an incredible volunteer for the University of Illinois" when he received his award from UIF representative Dr. George Kotteman.
A 1955 marketing graduate, Finn (shown at left with his wife Blanche) established his own independent furniture business headquartered in Dallas, Texas. He has been a member of the College of Commerce Business Advisory Council for a number of years and has never missed a meeting.
He was the key individual who volunteered to solicit and raise enough funds from alumni and friends to establish an endowment fund to honor former CBA dean, Howard Thomas. The first scholarships will be awarded next year. He has assumed another another volunteer leadership position with the College as the head of the Development Committee for the new Dean's Business Council.
One of his nominators for the Winter award said, "I don't believe I have ever heard Chuck say 'no' to a request that would help the University of Illinois." During the recent capital campaign, Finn served as a National Advocate and reviewed numerous lists, identified potential donors, and hosted Foundation and Commerce events in Dallas, Texas, on a regular basis. Another of his nominators said, "Chuck's love and dedication to the University is perhaps best demonstrated by the fact that, in retirement, he and Blanche have moved back to Champaign so that he can be closer to the institution that is such a huge part of his life."
His personal interest in and support of U of I athletics comes as no surprise either, because, as a U of I student, he was the equipment manager for the varsity football team. He now attends almost every football game and most basketball games.
Chuck and his wife, Blanche, have been longtime members of the Presidents Council. They regularly attend Foundation and University events and both are Foundation Members.
The William E. Winter Award was established 12 years ago to recognize individuals who understand, support, and promote the development efforts of the University of Illinois.
