Prospective MBA students at the University of Illinois' College of Business are being offered a golden opportunity: the chance to meet and impress some of the institution's most influential faculty and alumni, and win a full-ride scholarship in the process.
Champaign, Ill.—On February 4th, 2011, the College will host its first annual “Illinois MBA Scholarship Case Competition,” at Accenture’s Chicago Headquarters. The scholarship competition is the brainchild of Stig Lanesskog, associate dean for the Illinois MBA, who wanted to develop a way to introduce motivated prospective students to the types of experiential learning and critical thinking that will be required of them at the College of Business. It also affords students the opportunity to set themselves apart from other candidates.
“At Illinois, we believe in experiential learning, or learning by doing. We want our students to have every opportunity to hone the skills, including critical thinking, effective communication, and structured problem solving, required to lead in today’s business world. The scholarship case competition exposes students to the skills that we feel are required for success at a top MBA program and beyond,” says Lanesskog.
To further entice participation in the competition, the College is offering the winner a two-year scholarship to the Illinois MBA. Second prize is a one-year scholarship and third prize is a $10,000 scholarship. Students invited to participate in the case completion and who are admitted to the Illinois MBA will also have their travel expenses deducted from their first-year tuition.
“We realize what the economic realities are for many of our prospective students. It's difficult for them to imagine sacrificing a paycheck or steady income to dedicate themselves to a full-time program. This scholarship competition is just one way we hope we can help meet their financial needs while identifying top talent,” says Lanesskog.
According to Lanesskog, the program decided to use a case competition format because it is a critical part of the student experience. Case competitions provide an opportunity for students to take the skills learned in the classroom and apply them to real-life business problems. Case competitions also help students learn how to address competing points of view, and how to evaluate and take risks. In the Illinois MBA Scholarship Case Competition, participants will be asked to formulate recommendations on whether or not to go forward with a new product launch.
The Illinois MBA is a nationally-ranked master’s program dedicated to providing students with the skills and experiences to lead organizations in the 21st century.
