Illinois MBA’s Graduate Marketing Association Hosts 5K for Kola

The University of Illinois Arboretum was the venue for the 1st Annual April Fools 5K, hosted by the Illinois MBA’s Graduate Marketing Association, with all proceeds benefiting the Kola Foundation.
Over 100 runners turned out for the 85-degree day for a chance to run on the course that the University of Illinois Cross Country team uses. The event raised over $2,500 for Kola, with the proceeds from the race being used to bring three high school students from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation (S.D.) to the University of Illinois for the ACES Research Apprentice Program.
“The funds raised will be used to pay for the students expenses for getting here,” said James Cantu, race director. “We want to give these students an opportunity to learn at a major University and expose them to higher education that they may otherwise never have the opportunity to experience.”
Ron Lavaire, a teacher at Urbana Middle School, finished first in the 5K with a time of 16:37.6 and used this race as a training session for his upcoming full marathon competition.
