UIUC SIFE Team Wins Award

A team of students from the College of Business was named “Rookie of the Year” in a regional competition in Chicago last month.

The Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) team from the University of Illinois competed against SIFE teams from all over the Midwest, finished second in the competition, and won the Rookie of the Year award. The team focused its presentation on three unique enterprises: a toner recycling initiative, an Illini Career Advising program, and plan to help bring an ethanol plant to Champaign.

"It was an incredible experience for all of us, and we are proud to be a part of SIFE," said Brent Battaglia. "We feel like we are really making a difference in our community, while learning practical business skills at the same time."

SIFE is a global, non-profit organization that is working to change the world through highly dedicated student teams on more than 1,600 university campuses in 40 countries. SIFE offers these students the opportunity to develop leadership, teamwork and communication skills through learning, practicing, and teaching the principles of free enterprise, thereby improving the standard of living for millions in the process.

On the Illinois campus, this is a growing student organization currently consisting of 28 students from a variety of majors. These students each play an active role in the organization and gain knowledge and networking opportunities through various SIFE projects. The SIFE competition in Chicago gave students the opportunity to present their projects to upper level managers from various Fortune 500 companies, who were the main judges for this event.
