A Chance to Experience Business in China

Wenshu Yang, a sophomore in Accountancy, wants to help ILLINOIS students better understand the importance of international business in today’s fast-shrinking world so she has organized a trip to China this summer, tailored just for ILLINOIS students.

As the president of two registered student organizations on campus, BizChina and U.S. China Students Connection, Yang is spearheading a multi-pronged effort designed to help educate students about business operations in China, as well as provide social and cultural education for those interested in learning about the country.

Helping Yang are Tong Geng, Zekai Li, Yicheng Xin and Zhihao Hong, some of her fellow leaders in U.S. China Students Connection. The group is working with its contacts in China to coordinate this summer’s trip.

The activities of the trip, named “Entrepreneurship and Chinese Culture”, are designed to help students experience the cultural differences between China and the United States, Yang said.

On the three-week trip, the group will visit some of the country’s leading universities. Yang said students will have the opportunity to attend conferences, lectures and forums with professors and learn about the country’s different business practices.

“During the university visits, students will be able to meet some of the best and brightest Chinese students and professors to discuss topics such as business, entrepreneurship in China and the differences between Chinese and American business,” Yang said.

Students will also visit companies, comparing business operations of native companies and foreign companies in China.

While the students are in China, they will have the rare opportunity to attend the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai. Officially sanctioned by the Bureau of International Expositions, the World Expo is a festive event focused on a theme of building a better city for mankind, which reflects Shanghai’s own growth over the past 15 years.

Technological and business accomplishments of companies and organizations from around the world will be highlighted and 70 million visitors are expected to attend between May and October. Yang said it is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for students to attend the Expo.

“I think it will be great for the students to go there and see all of the best technology from all over the world,” Yang said.

The overall objective of the trip, and U.S. China Students Connection, is to educate students about international business and business in China, Yang said. She hopes the participants will be able to discover the China’s social, political, economic and cultural wealth. The students can also use the trip as a networking tool.

“We thought this is something that would be pretty neat to do,” Yang said. “Globalization is an important part of today’s world and China is such a fast-growing country with so many opportunities that students should be able to learn about those opportunities. We want to provide a starting point for students.”

Applications are being accepted for the three-week trip this summer. U.S. China Students Connection will host an informational meeting for all interested students on Thursday, February 25 at 7 p.m. in room 125 of David Kinley Hall.
