Organized jointly by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and University of Illinois at Chicago, with the participation of Dominican University and DePaul University, the Third Subsistence Marketplace Conference will be held July 9-11, 2010 in Chicago at the University of Illinois-Chicago campus.
The conference will focus on impactful research and commercial and social innovations for subsistence marketplaces that are ecologically, economically, and socially sustainable. Subsistence marketplaces consist of consumers and entrepreneurs who live at or near subsistence levels, and are concentrated in developing countries and regions such as Brazil, India, and Sub-Saharan Africa. As businesses, governments, and nonprofit organizations seek to better understand and serve these communities, the Subsistence Marketplaces Conference is a leading forum for sharing research on and fostering practices in these communities.
Conference plans include:
- a hands-on preconference workshop devoted to designing innovations for subsistence marketplaces or the base of the pyramid
- an opening reception at the UIC Innovation Center, including creativity exercises
- more than 30 research presentations by specialists in academia and practice from around the world
- plenary panels with experts from the private and public sectors
- participatory workshops by IDEO (the world’s leading innovation firm) and thought leaders from the University of Michigan and University of Illinois
- key note addresses by directors of social innovation programs from corporate and nonprofit organizations
- all sessions and workshops will be highly interactive and discussion-focused to maximize knowledge sharing among researchers, practitioners and students
Panelists (subject to final confirmation in some instances) include Jenny Comiskey (IDEO), Mohini Chopra (Global Strategies Group; Previously VP of Innovation Strategy and Resource Management, Wrigley), Paul Munsen (www.sunoven.com), Ladonna Redmond (President and CEO, Institute for Community Resource Development), Kathleen Robbins (Founder, Jatropha Pepinye & former Director of Green Microfinance), Robert Schneider (Senior Alliance Advisor, USAID), and Patrick Whitney (Dean, Institute of Design, Illinois Institute of Technology).

Learning from and Designing Innovative Product Solutions for Subsistence Marketplaces or the Base of the Pyramid
This workshop will be immersive and interactive, moving toward deep understanding of subsistence marketplaces as well as envisioning solutions. In order to develop an understanding of subsistence marketplaces, participants will engage in exercises to view the world from the eyes of subsistence consumers and entrepreneurs. The presenter will facilitate a bottom-up understanding generated by participants, and provide insights from extensive research. To envision solutions for subsistence marketplaces, small group assignments will help summarize insights from project based and research based experiences.
