Measurement and Research Methods

This research program stems from a belief that the existing literature on measurement is largely statistical and needs to be demystified. Numbers analyzed through statistical procedures can be precise, concrete, and sometimes illusive. What numbers mean and where they came from is in central focus in this book. Hence, the focus of this research program is in understanding the nature of measurement error and following this line of reasoning through to implications for measure and method development. This approach is reflected in the book, “Measurement Error and Research Design” and represented clockwise in the figure below starting with the upper right corner.  The paradigm shift this book calls for in examining the conceptual side of measurement influenced the development of a handbook of measurement with chapters by leading scholars across the social sciences (cover image above).
